you been thinking of changing your career or adding a new service to your
existing business? Now is the time to be on the cutting edge of a new
rapidly growing industry of permanent makeup artist by starting your own
highly profitable business. The permanent makeup field; which is growing
by leaps and bounds has opportunities that are endless.
Know that you can work as a free-lance artist for doctors, salons, spas,
personal clients or rent a room in a salon, spa or doctor’s office.
You can also expand the services you are doing now. If you are a makeup
artist or a hair colorist, your color background would give you a jump

Permanent makeup is a medically developed procedure of implanting pigments
into your skin to create an everlasting cosmetic effect. You can save
time and money in your routine grooming and not have to worry about smearing,
smudging, cosmetic allergies or makeup washing off. Permanent makeup can
enhance your eyebrows, eyes and lips. Uneven contours can also be corrected
to highlight your natural features. The treatment for sure is permanent!
It won’t wash off.

Qualifying
a client to see if she is a candidate for permanent makeup is an important
decision. A consultation is a must, at this time you would speak with
the client to find out her expectations. You will know if you will be
able to fulfill her needs. Once a client is qualified, release forms are
filled out, the procedure is explained; a patch test is done to make sure
there is no allergic reaction to the color.
During the consultation is when the color is discussed and/ or mixed to
her satisfaction. Your recommendations are definitely advised. Remember
when a client comes to you, you are promoting your professional services
through her. A deposit should be collected at this time; this insures
a commitment from the client. This is the beginning of building a repeat
business and referrals. Remember that every customer is free advertising
for you. They will need a touchup at least once a year to keep her work
fresh and bright, this of course will be the bread and butter of your
business. Keep in touch with your clients and let them know when it is
time to touchup.
If you are interested in learning the art of permanent makeup you must
be aware of some very important facts when choosing your training. Do
your homework by speaking to at least 3 companies that do training. How
long have they been teaching in the beauty industry, get a copy of they
biography to see how well rounded their experience is? Check out references
from students that have attended their classes. Was the instructor patient
with them, did they receive individual help and most important did they
understand everything that was covered during the theory portion of the
program. The theory portion should be 1/3 of the program, a written exam
should be given to make sure you have thorough understanding of the theory.
Without a thorough understanding of color theory and flesh tones of the
skin you will be unable to help the client choose the proper color during
the consultation. You should receive a reference manual that you can take
home with you for future use and a certificate of completion should be
given to verify that you have been trained through a professional program.
Find out what type and how much hands on training you will receive? What
type of technical support will be available to you once you have completed
the program. In the beginning you will have lots of questions and will
need the support of the instructor until you have built up you confidence
to be able to solve the situations yourself.
Don’t let the cost of the program determine which company you will
train with. Remember your education is the beginning of your journey to
success. When you receive a quality education in permanent makeup you
will feel confident in marketing yourself and your reputation will speak
for itself.
There are many supplies, equipment, numbing agents and pigments to choose
from on the market. Everyone has the best – we have all heard that
one before. You can try the products yourself, speak with someone who
is using it or speak with your instructor, as they should be aware of
the new products available on the market.
One of the most important things a permanent makeup artist must do is
continuing education. By attending trade shows, conferences, and classes,
you will keep abreast of all new products, equipment and techniques happening
in this fast growing industry.
It
will also keep you aware of the new state laws regulating permanent makeup
and any changes in insurance coverage or pricing.
Professional organizations are great support system. You not only get
to network and learn with your colleagues, but you get to exchange stories
and experience that can be very helpful to you in your practice. Newsletters
have a great deal of information this you will receive from your professional
organizations. National network organizations are popping up all over
the country and are being used as referral systems for the general public
as well as for training.
Advanced permanent makeup is only for permanent makeup artists that have
been actively practicing for at least 2 years. These 2 years experience
give you the knowledge you need to make decisions on how the color migrates
into the skin, which technique you would use for this particular corrective
work and how many treatments it may possibly take to get the final result.
The corrective work that I am speaking about would be for a burn patient
that has scarring, the areola of a breast cancer augmentation, a client
who has been suffering with alopecia or any other situation that may require
corrective and/ or camouflage work. It is not recommended to try and correct
another technicians work by going over it with your technique and colors,
because then you become responsible for the final results. It is always
recommended to have the area that needs correcting to be lasered or have
dermabrasion done so you can start with a clean, fresh area. Patience
from the client is the key to getting the job done right. Don’t
ever let a client rush you or talk you into doing something you don’t
feel good about. Always go with you gut feeling, that will be the right
decision. Your established reputation is something you have earned, you
can not buy it.
